Combe Manor Barns, a real hidden gem

Reflecting back at a wonderful season of weddings at Combe Manor Barns in 2024, I realise that we were very lucky with the weather. The weekends that were a general washout seemed to coincide with our few breaks between weddings, and so luckily most of our celebrations were dry, if not sunny too, and all the wedding guests could use most of the lovely outside space.

Serendipity? Or just that Combe magic that we are so lucky to share with the couples who chose to get married here.

We’ve noticed that most of the couples who book our venue are attracted by the beautiful surrounding landscape (what used to be termed an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, AONB, is now referred to as a National Landscape, huh?) and want to make the most of it during the day. The sweeping valley views are used as a backdrop for photos and the ‘Golden Hour’ shots round the back of the barns are particularly romantic. We had one couple who had birds of prey come and do a display with owls flying up and down, and we’ve had visiting ponies, alpacas and, of course, many pet dogs who are definitely included in the family group shots! It’s all fun and we are always open to new suggestions.

Many couples know the area from walking or cycling around here – or, on one occasion, from flying over in a light aircraft. They presented us with a beautiful aerial photograph of Combe Manor, the Barns and the grounds as a thank-you present after their joyful marriage here, which we will always treasure. Couples have got engaged on Walbury Hill, or by Combe Gibbet, and some couples go up to the top of the hill for photographs too. There really is nowhere else like it in England, on a clear day.

Sometimes, when we have first viewings in the depths of winter, when the trees are bare and the valley is shrouded in mist, I have to try and describe the beauty of Combe. We welcome the couple and their families into the Manor House with a roaring fire and chat, and of course, the barns speak for themselves, even when chilly. If the couple can make the leap with their imagination and book us, they are amazed when they come back for later visits in the spring and summer. We certainly have our own micro-climate here!

Despite doing some discreet marketing here and there, we love it when some people say: ‘we never knew you were here, it really is a hidden gem!’ It’s that sense of discovering a treasure that makes the adventure of the single-track road through the valley and the tiny village of Combe worthwhile and so special.
